Overview
Founded in 2002 by Der Kaktus and Jugendkulturhaus Cairo, the Würzburger Improtheaterfestival has grown into one of Europe's largest improvisational theatre festivals. Each October, around 100 improvisers from around the world gather in Würzburg to train with international faculty and perform across multiple venues throughout the city. The festival is now run by a volunteer-led association, Würzburger Improtheaterfestival e.V., and presents the full range of improvised theatre, from experimental work to classical formats.
The 24th edition runs October 22 - 25, 2026, mainly in and around the Jugendkulturhaus Cairo. Each year the festival presents between eight and twelve shows across multiple Würzburg venues; the 2026 show programme is published one to two months before the festival weekend, with tickets sold via Yesticket. Workshop faculty for 2026 are Gunter Lösel and Nicole Erichsen (Karlsruhe / Zurich), Pippa Evans (London), and Antonio Vulpio (Bologna); all three 12-hour workshops sold out. Signature recurring programs include Maestro and the international Collab:Lab. The festival is led by Carina Odenbreit (director) with Kati Schweitzer and Jesko Bahr (artistic directors).
Submissions
Show and workshop applications for 2026 were accepted via lottery between May 8 and May 17, 2026, and that window has now closed. All three festival workshops are sold out for 2026.
