Overview
ESPONTÂNEO is an international theatre-improv festival in Sintra, Portugal, produced by the company Instantâneos. Founded in 2012 and based at the Centro Cultural Olga Cadaval since 2014, it bills itself as the largest improv theatre festival in Portugal and one of the most prestigious in Europe, carrying the European Festivals Association's "Remarkable Arts Festival" seal. Over more than a decade it has hosted many of the improv world's best-known names, including Patti Stiles, Susan Messing, Omar Argentino Galvan, and ImproMadrid, and it has since expanded abroad with editions in the Dominican Republic and Colombia.
The most recent confirmed edition was the 13th, held February 27 to March 2, 2025, gathering improvisers from Portugal, Spain, the UK, Canada, Colombia, Brazil, and Mexico for shows and workshops at the Olga Cadaval cultural centre, with free entry by advance reservation. The festival also runs a workshop program and created the Campeonato Mundial de Improviso (World Improv Championship) in partnership with Lisbon's Coliseu dos Recreios.
