Defrost Festival is an annual mid-winter celebration of improv and sketch comedy in Melbourne, organized by The Improv Conspiracy (TIC). Billing itself as "the biggest improv and sketch festival in the Southern Hemisphere," the festival features over 50 unique shows, events, and workshops across The Improv Conspiracy Theatre and Theory Bar. Founded by TIC artistic director Adam Kangas, the festival first ran in 2022 and has grown steadily each year. Festival Director Laura Buskes leads programming and organization.
The programming spans a range of formats: from 90-minute spectaculars and 60-minute premium shows to 30-minute community performances and late-night social events. The 2026 edition showcases improvised musicals, TV parody shows, experimental formats, and sketch comedy. Friday and Saturday nights feature late-night events at Theory Bar. Workshops are open to all experience levels with no prerequisites, featuring local and interstate instructors.
Tickets for the 2026 edition are on sale now. The full lineup of 50+ shows is published at improvconspiracy.com/defrost-festival/2026.
Applications for the 2026 festival have closed (workshop applications closed May 7 and show applications closed May 11, 2026).
